The Problem- NO Next Step

One area of our work is youth homelessness support. Whilst our Aylesbury Nightstop project has proved to be is a successful emergency solution for young people facing a homelessness crisis, we often struggle to find longer-term accommodation for our young people.

So in about 50% of cases, there is NO NEXT STEP and so they remain homeless. In most cases, if you’re 18 years old or above you are not considered “priority” homeless and are therefore not entitled to Council accommodation. Regarding private tenancies, landlords are disinclined to rent to young people on benefits and rents are often unaffordable.

Proposed Solution – The Next Step

At Youth Concern we are setting up a flagship youth supported accommodation and employment pathways project called “The Next Step”. This 10-bed project will provide up to 20 young people with a safe home for up to a year. Bespoke one-to-one support packages will be provided focussing on health, skills, employment and resettlement, to enable a smooth transition to independent living.

We are delighted to have raised more than £800K towards this ambitious £1million project and now we need your help to secure the final £150k to launch this life-changing project.

“We’re asking local businesses to pledge a minimum of £100 a month. A modest donation goes a long way and I hope you’ll agree that we have some fantastic benefits to offer businesses in return” says Fran Borg-Wheeler, CEO of Youth Concern. “Over the past year, we have provided practical and emotional support to 515 vulnerable young people, most of whom face multiple disadvantages such as homelessness, abuse, neglect, poverty, bereavement, mental health and substance misuse”.

A young person’s story

“I feel the support I received from Youth Concern was excellent-it helped me focus on a future and changed my life for the better”

Andrew had recently become homeless, had been in prison and had mental health issues. Tragically, he suffered the bereavement of his 18-month daughter and turned to drugs as an escape. With the help of free, intensive support from Youth Concern, Andrew is re-building his life. He now has secure accommodation, is in full-time work and has stopped using drugs.
